Celebrating its 62nd year, the Graduate Study Programme (GSP) at the United Nations Geneva stands as a testament to the UN’s commitment to fostering global education and cooperation. With a rich history of training over 3,000 young minds from more than 110 countries, the GSP continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. This intensive two-week summer seminar serves as a unique platform for participants to delve into the intricacies of the United Nations and gain insights into “International Geneva” through a blend of firsthand observations, lectures, research, and networking.

The 62nd GSP: Summit of the Future

Mark your calendars for the Summit of the Future, set to unfold at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 22-23 September 2024. Termed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity, this summit aims to bolster collaboration on critical global challenges, bridge gaps in global governance, and reaffirm commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Charter. The focus is on ushering in a revitalized multilateral system, better equipped to positively impact lives globally. UN Member States will convene to lay the groundwork for more effective global cooperation, addressing current challenges and anticipating future threats.

The Summit’s pinnacle will be the intergovernmentally negotiated “Pact for the Future,” consisting of five pivotal chapters:

1. Sustainable Development and Financing for Development
2. International Peace and Security
3. Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Cooperation
4. Youth and Future Generations
5. Transforming Global Governance

In preparation for the Summit, the UN Secretary-General has issued eleven Policy Briefs, providing in-depth insights into specific proposals outlined in “Our Common Agenda.” These briefs aim to guide Member States in their preparations for the Summit.

62nd GSP: Challenges and Opportunities

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, the 62nd GSP will unfold from 1 to 12 July 2024, under the theme “Summit of the Future: Challenges and Opportunities.” The program’s agenda comprises morning lectures by UN representatives, international organizations, civil society leaders, and diplomats. Afternoons will be dedicated to group projects, institution visits, and research, with students organized into five working groups aligned with the Pact for the Future’s chapters. The students will present their findings through short papers and presentations at the program’s conclusion. Emphasizing student-led and student-owned collaboration, the process will see limited facilitator support.

Application Details

While the GSP offers a transformative experience, participants should be prepared for an intensive schedule, requiring an average time commitment of 8-10 hours per day over ten days. While participation is free of charge, participants are responsible for covering their visa, travel, board, and lodging expenses in Geneva. Unfortunately, the UN Office at Geneva cannot provide scholarships or sponsorships.
