KOLKATA: Renowned Bengali vocalist Anup Ghoshal, recognized for his iconic rendition of the song ‘Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi’ from the 1983 movie Masoom, and for his contributions to various musical creations by Satyajit Ray, passed away in Kolkata. The family of Ghoshal confirmed his demise, revealing that he breathed his last on Friday.

At the age of 77, Ghoshal succumbed to multiple organ failure at 1:40 pm after battling age-related ailments during his hospitalization at a private facility in south Kolkata for several days. He is survived by his two daughters.

With an illustrious career spanning across Bengali, Hindi, and other language songs, Ghoshal carved a niche for himself as a versatile singer. His repertoire encompassed compositions by Kazi Nazrul Islam, Rabindranath Tagore, and modern Bengali melodies. Notably, he left an indelible mark as a playback singer in Satyajit Ray’s acclaimed movies like Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969) and Hirak Rajar Deshe (1980), as well as in Tapan Sinha’s Sagina Mahato (1971).

Apart from his noteworthy contributions in movies such as ‘Fuleswari’, ‘Marjina Abdalla’, and ‘Chhadmabeshi’, Ghoshal’s rendition of ‘Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi’ in Shekhar Kapur’s Masoom resonated deeply with audiences nationwide. His musical talent extended beyond Bengali and Hindi cinema, as he lent his voice to films in various Indian languages, including Assamese and Bhojpuri.

Born in 1945, Ghoshal’s musical journey commenced under the guidance of his mother, Labanya Ghoshal, in his early years. He furthered his skills by studying classical music under Pt Sukhendu Goswami and later excelled in MA Classical Music at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata.

While Ghoshal briefly ventured into politics and won the Uttar Para assembly constituency seat in 2011 on the Trinamool Congress ticket, he did not pursue any subsequent political campaigns. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, acknowledging Ghoshal’s immense contributions to music across different languages.

Anup Ghoshal’s demise marks the end of an era in the music industry, leaving behind a legacy of soul-stirring melodies and unforgettable contributions to the world of cinema.
