The global smartphone market kicked off 2024 with a 7.8% year-over-year increase in shipments according to the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker (April 15, 2024).
This, however, translates to a total shipment volume of 289.4 million units, indicating a slight dip compared to the previous year. This cautious growth marks the third consecutive quarter of shipment increase, hinting at a potential market recovery despite lingering macroeconomic challenges.
Shifting Tides: Samsung Reclaims Top Spot, While New Contenders Rise
After a brief reign by Apple in late 2023, Samsung recaptured the number one position in Q1 2024. Both companies are expected to maintain dominance in the premium segment, but analysts predict a more diversified market fueled by the resurgence of Huawei in China and significant progress from other major players like Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and Vivo. This trend is likely to push Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to explore diversification and expansion strategies as the market rebounds.
Evolving Consumer Preferences: Value and Durability Take Center Stage
Nabila Popal, research director at IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team, highlights a crucial shift in consumer behavior – a growing focus on value and Average Selling Prices (ASPs). This translates to a preference for higher-priced smartphones that offer extended lifespans. This trend, coupled with the power shift among the top 5 brands, underscores the need for market players to adapt to the post-recovery environment.
Xiaomi’s Resurgence and Transsion’s Global Push
Xiaomi is making a remarkable comeback after facing setbacks in the past two years. Transsion, on the other hand, is solidifying its position among the top five with aggressive expansion strategies in international markets. Although neither Apple nor Samsung experienced positive growth in Q1, IDC suggests Samsung is in a stronger relative position.
