Also, please note that NECO exams usually commence one or two weeks after the West Africa Senior Secondary
Certificate Examination (WASSCE) . You may like to check the WAEC official timetable.
When is NECO starting in 2023?
According to the NECO 2023 Timetable, the examination will begin on Monday, July 3, 2023 to Friday, August 4th, 2023. Please, ignore rumor of postponment, as the commencement date remains July 3rd.
Details of NECO Timetable 2023 for July/August
It’s important to note that NECO SSCE internal exam has about seventy six (76) subjects. The minimum number of subjects a candidate can sit for is eight (8), while maximum is nine (9).

NECO Registration
Registration usually start from December and closes May (from past experience) but this could change depending on government’s policy on education.
NECO Timetable
After the West African Examination Council (WEAC) have released its own time table and closing of all registration process across the country, the NECO examination body will then release exam timetable, which include examination dates and time for all subjects.
Exam Type
The NECO Senior Secondary examination is of two types:
- The Internal NECO exam, and
- Private NECO.
The NECO Internal exam is the type designed for students in senior secondary school. Therefore, one must be a student of accredited schools before he/she can sit for it.
Private NECO exam also known as NECO GCE. it is the type designed for students who are not officially or academically attached to any school. Candidates register as private individual and were given a specific exam number and centre.
