Chennai's U-Shaped Flyover: Unveiling a Smooth Ride to Indira Nagar MRTS Station

Chennai’s U-Shaped Flyover: Unveiling a Smooth Ride to Indira Nagar MRTS Station. A Boon for Commuters. Chennai celebrated a significant milestone in its transportation infrastructure as the newly constructed U-shaped flyover near the Indira Nagar MRTS station opened its lanes to traffic, offering a major respite to commuters navigating Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR).

The inauguration took place on Thursday, promising to alleviate congestion and reduce wait times at critical points along one of the city’s prime IT corridors. Notably, Rajiv Gandhi’s salai will no longer host a traffic signal, streamlining the flow of vehicles in the area.

Sitting prominently at the Indira Nagar junction, this impressive 237-meter-long bridge comprises 19 legs, each spanning 12.5 meters. The design features a 120-meter ascending ramp on the right side of Rajiv Gandhi Road and a corresponding 120-meter descending ramp on the left side.

The functionality of the U-shaped flyover lies in its facilitation of smoother movement for vehicles traveling from Siruseri towards Madhya Kailash. Commuters can now seamlessly make a U-turn at the elevated level, using Indira Nagar Second Avenue and interconnected roads to access their desired destinations.

Previously, the bottleneck of traffic was palpable, with vehicles enduring substantial delays of 20 to 30 minutes at two critical traffic signals along Rajiv Gandhi Road — the Indira Nagar Junction and Tidel Park Junction. This congestion adversely affected the area, prompting the state government to initiate a permanent solution in the form of U-shaped flyovers at both aforementioned junctions.

With the inauguration of the Indira Nagar U-shaped flyover for public use, commuters heading from Sholinganallur can now execute a smooth U-turn via the flyover, traversing Indira Nagar en route to Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur without encountering traffic snarls.

The introduction of this innovative infrastructure promises not only smoother traffic flow but also a marked reduction in congestion, enhancing the overall commuting experience for residents and professionals traversing Chennai’s bustling IT corridor.
